Lead Catastrophe Modeler (MS or Ph.D. in Civil and Structural Engineering, Applied Maths, Urban Planning)

Job Description

Department:
The Model Development group focuses on developing industry leading stochastic catastrophe models for the quantification and management of catastrophe risk.  From regional based earthquake and hurricane models to terrorism risk models, the industry and our 400+ clients recognize RMS as the largest developer of catastrophe models in the risk market.  RMS continues to drive industry innovation with the enhancement and expansion of our leading models.
Key Accountabilities & Deliverables:
As Lead Modeler he will be working in a multidisciplinary global environment with other catastrophe risk modelers and would be engaged in development/implementation of a wide range of all climate hazard perils (tornado, flood, windstorm, etc). Hence position requires leading a team of modelers, engineers, analysts, etc. to develop/implement natural hazard models that are used to estimate and manage financial risk. Candidates should be able to understand and research catastrophe models such that they are able to implement them into the hazard data applications effectively. He is also expected to coordinate with other groups such as Geocoding, SMG, Software and Analytics during the model release. The ideal candidate will be a very dynamic individual with constant drive to learn multidisciplinary functions involving knowledge of Probability, Statistics, Civil engineering, Structural engineering, Wind Engineering, Sociology, Economics, Building Valuation, Surveying, Geo-informatics, and Computer Programming.  This person should have the ability to thrive in a fast-paced high energy engineering environment
  • Craft out solutions effectively for the team to implement
  • Strong people management skills in a global environment
  • Lead research and development activities related to property and casualty exposure modeling.
  • Research and mine socio-economic and engineering information related to insured properties mainly in American (North, Central and South,) European or Asian (East and Pacific) Countries.
  • Evaluating the Insurance policy language in P&C industry in such countries and translating those details to implementable assumptions.
  • Statistical analysis of historical damage and insurance claims data. Loss trending, exposure disaggregation, historical event reconstruction/calibration and model projection (future trending).
  • Strong knowledge of probability, statistics, stochastic simulation and mathematical modeling is essential. The position will demand innovative problem solving skills and the ability to develop mathematical models to represent various aspects of natural hazard risk.
  • Developing statistical models to estimate insured exposure using building permit data, census data, tax and other public data and etc.
  • Data implementation of RMS products: SQL implementation of exposure data and QA of corresponding exposure products.
  • Producing loss and exposure maps across different countries and regions.

Desired Skills & Experience

Experience Required:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in an engineering or science related field including but not limited to: Civil and Structural Engineering, Financial Engineering, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Math, Urban Planning, Econometrics, Actuarial, Science, Statistics or other related fields.
  • Experience in developing exposure models, catastrophe models or other relevant experience in predictive analytics.
  • Excellent knowledge of building systems, building design and construction practices.
  •  Knowledge of engineering economy, building or project valuation methods and cost estimation is required for success in this position.
  • Understanding of risk modeling, risk assessment, uncertainty analysis in stochastic systems is required. Previous work experience or relevant courses to the subject is required.
  • High level of proficiency in data analysis, data mining and data manipulation software tools in particular SQL.
  • Hands on experience and knowledge of any of the following will be helpful: FORTRAN, C, C++, MATLAB, Visual Basic, or other statistical packages such as R, S-plus or SAS.
  • Detail oriented ability to learn quickly, strong analytical organizational skills.
  • A team player with a high-degree of self-motivation.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, as evidenced by technical presentations at meetings and conferences.

Successful Candidates:
  • A keen sense of foresight, effective analytical mind, sound judgment and enthusiastic approach to the numerous and complex plans, coupled with great sense of responsibility, initiative and cooperative attitude.
  • Should be detail oriented and be a team player with a high degree of self-motivation
  • Have an ability to learn quickly
  • Have a solid to high proficiency in database programming and database architecture
  • Hands on experience and knowledge of any of the following will be helpful: FORTRAN, C, C++, MATLAB, Visual Basic, or other statistical packages such as R, S-plus or SAS.
  • Ability to manage/lead multiple projects at any one time.
  • Prior knowledge of RMS products would be advantageous but not essential as training will be provided.

Company Description

RMS is the world's leading provider of products, services, and expertise for the quantification and management of catastrophe risk. Founded at Stanford University in 1988, RMS grew rapidly in the 1990s, offering sophisticated products and services for the management of catastrophe risk associated with natural perils such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and windstorms, as well as products for weather derivatives and enterprise risk management for the P&C insurance industry. Today, RMS also leads the market in risk modeling for man-made disasters associated with acts of terrorism, and recently released the first infectious disease model to quantify and manage the risks associated with pandemic disease on the world’s population and economy.
