SAS Enterprise Guide



About the windows and toolbars
The SAS Enterprise Guide application can have up to nine separate windows. These windows can be docked or undocked. In addition, the SAS Enterprise Guide application includes a workspace in which your data, results, code, logs, and notes are displayed. The workspace cannot be closed or undocked.
displays the process flow for the project. The process flow shows the relationship between objects, such as data sets, tasks, and output.
displays the active project and its associated Data, Code, Log, Notes, and Results windows.
displays a list of all of the available tasks, either sorted by category or alphabetically. Double-click a task name to begin using it.
displays a list of all the available SAS servers.
displays a list of binders, or virtual folders, that can be mapped to folders or directories on a server or to folders in your Windows native file system. Binders can contain SAS Enterprise Guide projects, code files, SAS data files, and other types of data files. For information about adding binders, refer to SAS Enterprise Guide Explorer 4.1: User's Guide.
displays a list of all of your stored processes by repository. You can select a stored process from this list and add it to your current project.
displays the status, queue position, and server of any task that is currently running.
displays targeted help for the selected option.
displays an aggregated log of the entire project.

You can click to minimize, or pin, windows along the edges of the SAS Enterprise Guide application. The pinned windows are reduced to tabs. To access a pinned window, move your mouse over the tab. The window is displayed until you move your mouse out of the window.
To permanently display a window that you have pinned, click .
You can minimize all of the windows at one time and therefore maximize the workspace by selecting View Maximize Workspace or by clicking . To display the minimized windows again, select the option or click again.
Toolbars
There are five toolbars that you can display in SAS Enterprise Guide.
Active Data
displays the active data item in the Project Explorer and process flow. You can use the drop-down list to select a new active data item, or you can select the data item from the Project Explorer or process flow.
Control
enables you to control the processing of code, tasks, queries, and stored processes.
Project
enables you to add new items (project, process flow, stored process, data, code and note) to the current project.
View
enables you to open the nine separate windows that comprise the SAS Enterprise Guide application and minimize or maximize the workspace.
Standard
enables you to manage your files. For example, from this toolbar you can create new files, save existing files, cut and paste text, delete text, and search for text.
By default, all of the toolbars are displayed. To change the toolbars that are displayed, select View Toolbars and select or clear the toolbar name.
By default, the toolbars are docked at the top of the SAS Enterprise Guide window, but you can move them to any location on your screen by dragging the separator bars between toolbars.
Customizing the application
By default, when items such as data, code, or results are displayed in the SAS Enterprise Guide workspace, they are displayed with tabs. You can also choose to use
separate document windows, in which each item is displayed in its own window within the workspace.
SAS Enterprise Guide is fully customizable at the user and the site level. At the user level, you can customize the appearance of menus and toolbars, create a new toolbar, and add buttons to a toolbar by selecting View Toolbars Customize. Site-level customizations are handled by your site administrator.

You can undock the default windows, dock other windows, and rearrange the placement of the docked windows. All of the windows on the View menu are dockable.
To undock a window, use the title bar at the top of the window to drag the window away from the docked position.
To dock a window, drag it to an edge of the application until it changes shape and then release it. To prevent the window from docking, press the CTRL key as you drag it.
You can also reset docking windows to set all of the dockable windows to their default locations.

To undock a toolbar, click the wide bar at the left edge of the toolbar and drag the toolbar away from the docked position.
To dock a toolbar, drag it toward the edge where you want to dock it until it changes shape and then release it. To prevent the window from docking, press the CTRL key as you drag it.
Working with Projects
Opening an existing project
You can open an existing project either when you first start up SAS Enterprise Guide or when you close the current project and open another one. You can have only one project open at a time in SAS Enterprise Guide.
You can migrate project files from previous versions of SAS Enterprise Guide so that they can be used in SAS Enterprise Guide 4.1.
To open an existing project when you invoke SAS Enterprise Guide
  1. Select the project or More projects from the Open a project list in the Welcome to SAS Enterprise Guide window.
  2. If you click More projects, you are prompted to choose the location from which you want to open the project. After you select the location, the Open window opens.
  3. Select the correct folder from the Look in drop-down list.
  4. If the filter is not set to display only project files, select SAS Enterprise Guide Project Files (*.egp) from the Files of type drop-down list.
  5. Select the project file that you want to add and click Open, or double-click the project file.
To open an existing project when SAS Enterprise Guide is already running
  • Select File Open Project, and then select the location where the project resides. You can select from the following:
Local Computer
To open a project that resides on your local network. Select the project that you want to open and click Open or double-click the filename.
SAS Servers/Folders
To open a project that resides on a SAS server or in a binder. Binders are virtual folders that can be mapped to folders or directories on a server or to folders in your Windows native file system. Binders can contain SAS Enterprise Guide projects, code files, SAS data files, and other types of data files. Select the project that you want to open and click Open, or double-click the filename.

You can also open projects that you have recently viewed. To open one of these projects, select File and then select a project from the list of recently viewed projects in the menu.
